A Dog Named Potato

Yesterday I almost abandoned I Found This Funny. Then, I came across "What I Wish I'd Known" by Nora Ephron, and decided to give the book a second chance. "What I Wish I'd Known" is only thirty-one sentences long, but in my opinion, they are the most meaningful thirty-one sentences of the book thus far. Like the title suggests, the selection is a list of things the author wishes she'd known. A few examples are:

  • "People have only one way to be."
  • "Don't buy anything that is 100 percent wool, even if it seems to be very soft and not particularly itchy when you try it on in the store." (This sentence made me laugh, because it is a lesson I have learned the expensive way.)
  • "The world's greatest babysitter burns out after two and a half years."
  • "The last four years of psychoanalysis are a waste of money." (I found this sentence absolutely hilarious.)
  • "The plane is not going to crash." (This is one of my favorites because I always question my safety when I'm on an aircraft.)
  • "You can order more than one dessert." (In my family, this is already an accepted fact.)
  • "If friends ask you to be their child's guardian in cast they die in a plane crash, you can say no." (This one is ironic because one the the truths preceding this one is that the plane won't crash.)
However, most of the other stories in the book are confusing and strange. For instance, in the story I'm reading now, a woman has a bizarre dream about Prince William. After her dream, she becomes obsessed with the idea that they should be lovers. So, she goes for a walk because she wants to lose ten pounds before she seduces the prince. On her walk, she runs into a woman looking for a dog named 'Potato.' I have not finished the story yet, but I predict that it is going to just get more random.

Although I have found the majority of the stories to be duds, there are some charmers in the mix.
